You will learn to understand texts  about global issues and to express your opinion using the “congiuntivo” verb mode. You will also learn to advertise events relating to charity.

The congiuntivo (subjunctive) is a new verb mood used to express opinions, doubtemotions or desires. Take notes as you watch the video explanations below.

Conjugations

Follow the pattern below to conjugate verbs in the “congiuntivo presente)

When conjugating in the congiuntivo passato, use the following:

avere: abbia, abbia, abbia, abbiamo, abbiate, abbiano

essere: sia, sia, sia, siamo, siate, siano

Verbi irregolari nel congiuntivo

Ecco un link per i verbi irregolari. Note that many of the verbs that are irregular in the present tense are also irregular in the congiuntivo and generally take the same stem.

Eg. Fare: Present tense indicative =faccio; present tense subjunctive =faccia

Il congiuntivo (imperfetto)

The ‘congiuntivo imperfetto’ is generally used after IF clauses and is followed by a conditional verb:

eg. Se io fossi in te, eviterei i cibi grassi

eg. Se tu studiassi di piu`, prenderesti dei bei voti

Use the ‘congiuntivo imperfetto’ when you would normally use the ‘indicativo imperfetto’ (eg. habitual actions in the past, weather in the past, emotions or physical states in the past, background information in recounts about the past) for phrases introduced by verbs indicating opinionsdoubtemotions or desires.

eg. Da piccola Katy cantava nel coro della chiesa.

–> Penso che da piccola Katy cantasse nel coro della chiesa

eg. Ieri faceva caldo a Roma

–> Credo che ieri facesse caldo a Roma

eg. Le mie figlie erano ammalate il giorno di Natale

eg. –> Mi dispiace che le mie figlie fossero ammalate il giorno di Natale

Here are some step-by-step suggestions

  • Start with information about the event – title, date & time, location, actors & directors

Il 2 giugno alle 13.30 presso il Teatro Potts andra` in scena lo spettacolo teatrale “Amore e odio”, interpretato e diretto dagli studenti del liceo MLC.

  • Then describe the plot.

“Amore e odio”, scritto da Carlo Bianchi,  racconta la storia di un ragazzo schizofrenico che si innamora della sua psicologa.

Have a better idea for a task? Go ahead and do it, as long as it meets that same purpose and that it can be documented.

                  TASK                                                                                                       PURPOSE

1.
  • (optional) CONTRIBUTE to the collaborative vocab list entitled “global issues
  • TIPS:Find all the relevant words from the handouts and resources for the topics below.  Also search language learning websites and brainstorm words you believe will be useful. Remember to add the words that appear in the “what you need to know” section of this unit.
To build an extensive vocabulary list for the entire class to share, use as a reference list and personalise.

  • MEMORISE all the vocabulary and expressions from the unit and practise your words with your peer tutor  asking him/her to correct your pronunciation.
  • TIPS:Use  the class quizlet set or make your own.  Find other useful vocab learning websites and aps, record your voice repeating the words, do “look say cover write check”, compete with your friends in your own quiz show-style game.
To drill and memorise all relevant vocabulary. To learn the correct pronunciation of words.

  •  PRACTISE conjugating verbs in the congiuntivo presente, congiuntivo passato and congiuntivo imperfetto via this online conjugating site. Check your answers and continue until you get 100% for all three tenses.

  • IN CLASS TASK:
  • SCRIVI una locandina pubblicizzando un evento che si terra` presso la tua scuola ai fini di beneficenza . You may ask to have it marked by your Italian peer-tutor or by prof.
  • TIPS:Use samples in the unit or find your own on google.it by typing in words such as “beneficenza”, “il ricavato… a sostegno”

  • IN CLASS TASK:
  • SCRIVI almeno 50 parole: Hai letto un articolo online sulla povertà` nei paesi in via di sviluppo e ti è piaciuto molto. Scrivi un commento sul sito web spiegando:
    • Perché` ti è piaciuto
    • che cosa fai tu personalmente per sostenere progetti di beneficenza
    • Perché`, secondo te, è importante sostenere organizzazioni di beneficienza

    Ask either Prof or your Italian peer-tutor to mark it for you.

  • STUCK? :Ask your peer tutor to write a sample answer for you then use it to write your own
