Useful language

Describing your suburb

  • Start with abito in un quartiere + adjectives or expressions

Abito in un quartiere molto tranquillo e pieno di verde

  • Express it’s location

che si trova a 20 km dal centro

  • Describe services and buildings, adding an adjective to some of the nouns

Il mio quartiere ha due bellissime chiese, una grande biblioteca, una palestra con una piscina, tanti parchi e un piccolo centro commerciale

  • You may want to say that you also have a piazza in your suburb, and recycle the language from “describing a visual stimulus” to provide a detailed description of it

  • Say what you do in some of the mentioned places:

Describing your house

  • Open with Abito in + type of house + additional info

Abito in una villetta a due piani in una via molto trafficata

  • You can then mention the rooms with an adjective beside a few:

Al piano terra ci sono una cucina moderna, un soggiorno spazioso, uno studio, un piccolo bagno e un garage molto grande. Al primo piano, invece, ci sono tre camere da letto e due bagni – uno per i miei genitori e uno per me e per i miei fratelli.

  • Mention the garden

Abbiamo anche un bel giardinetto con un piccolo prato, una piscina e alcune piante.

  • Perhaps describe your room in detail

La mia camera e` piuttosto grande e luminosa. Oltre al letto, ci sono una scrivania dove faccio i compiti, un armadio per i miei vestiti e un libreria.

  • You could also talk about your favourite space.

La mia stanza preferita e` il soggiorno, dove guardo la televisione con la mia famiglia o mi rilasso sul divano con un libro in mano

Writing an ad 

  • If you are selling your house, the title can be VENDESI + type of house:

VENDESI VILLA A SCHIERA

  • If your ad is about renting, the title can be AFFITTASI + type of house:

AFFITTASI APPARTAMENTO IN CENTRO

  • If you are looking for a house to rent, you can use the title CERCASI + type of house:

1.
  • (optional) CONTRIBUTE to the collaborative vocab list entitled “casa
  • TIPS:As you run into new words or useful expressions for the topic, add them here.
To build an extensive vocabulary list for the entire class to share, use as a reference list and personalise. To have a bank of vocab and expressions to use when preparing for the individual oral exam in Yr 12 and to use when completing IB writing tasks  about holidays.

  • MEMORISE all the vocabulary and expressions from the unit and practise your words with your peer tutor asking him/her to correct your pronunciation or use a text-to-audio app.
  • TIPS: Use  the class quizlet set or make your own.  Find other useful vocab learning websites and aps, record your voice repeating the words, do “look say cover write check”, compete with your friends in your own quiz show-style game
 To drill and memorise all relevant vocabulary and expressions.To perfect your pronunciation.
3. to check your understanding of future plans vocabulary & expressions, to pick up new vocabulary and structures and to develop your text-handling skills for the IB exam

  • IN CLASS TASK:
  • COMPLETE the following long writing task: il tuo amico di penna vuol sapere dove abiti. Scrivigli una mail descrivendo la tua casa e il tuo quartiere  (100-150 ww)
  • TIPS: use our sample writing taskto guide you. Also use the responses from our peer tutors Include some of their expressions into your email, changing a few words to make it pertinent to you.

  • IN CLASS TASK:
  • COMPLETE the following short writing tasks (50 ww):
  • Scrivi un annuncio per vendere la tua casa 
  • Vuoi affittare una casa in Italia. Scrivi un annuncio con tutte le tue richieste relative alla casa ( luogo, numero di stanze, periodo ecc). 
  • TIPS: recycle language from hotels (eg. un balcone che dà sul mare, l’aria condizionata) or read some real ads and adapt them for these tasks

to become more independent in your language learning by using authentic texts as samples for your own writing tasks. To identify useful sentences and adapt them for your own purposes avoiding grammatical errors in the process.

  • PEER TUTOR TASK:
  • ASK your peer tutor to test you on your vocab list and to correct your pronunciation. Highlight the words you mispronounce. Now read out just the highlighted words once again and take notes on how to pronounce them or complete using the text-to-audio app.
To develop your understanding of Italian phonetics and improve your pronunciation.

  • PEER TUTOR TASK:
  • ASK your peer tutor to write an answer for the following question: “Descrivimi il tuo quartiere; com’e` la tua casa?  Remember to copy & paste their answers here
 To see different ways of answering the question to enrich your vocab and discover new expressions. To have answers from native speakers to use as a model when planning your response and studying for the IB individual oral.

  • PEER TUTOR TASK:
  • Prepare an answer to the questions above and say it to your peer tutor.
